But someone, or a group of people, are stealing or damaging the signs, ripping them right off their posts, said Village Manager Philip E. Zegarelli.
The signs started disappearing in September and to date, 21 signs are now in need of replacement, Zegarelli said in a letter to residents.
Each sign costs $210, and then add the cost of replacement poles, concrete footings, sign braces, and labor brings the cost to more than $10,000 to get the replacement done.
Village officials said the stolen sign may be part of a scavenger hunt that was reportedly organized online.
Zegarelli said the theft of the signs is not just a prank or scavenger hunt targe," it's costly vandalism."
Now, Briarcliff Manor police are asking residents with "Ring-type" security devices that monitor the front of their homes to check the recordings to see if any of the "vandalism" was caught on camera. If so, they would like to see video surveillance.
The village manager also asked residents to be watchful and report any theft or destruction to the police department, or to his office.
The village is hoping to have the missing signs replaced within the coming week.
